130610 - Day 6

Today is the 6th day since we left Singapore. The past few days have been filled with many memorable experiences and today is of no exception.

After we had eaten our fill during breakfast, we headed out to Kong Zi Temple. It is said that students who pray sincerely to the statue of Kong Zi for knowledge and wisdom, would have their prayers answered. Hence, when their examinations are around the corner, some students would visit the temple and pray to Kong Zi.

Next, we paid a visit to Jie Yang vocational and technical college. We were warmly greeted by the people there and brought to a meeting room where the principal of the school shared with us a lot about the history and culture of the school. He told us that 2 of their teachers were sent to Singapore for a learning experience. The trip was a great success and they would send another batch of people some time after. He also told us some statistics such as they had 6,400,000 people when they first started in 1999. Every year, only 2000 students would be selected to enter the school based on their dialect and academic results. This meant that there would be tough competition between candidates for a place in this school.

The education system there is also different from ours. Local schools create new courses and groom youths to excel in certain professions in order to cater to the society’s needs. For example, if the country is in need of more doctors, there would be more medical courses and lessons to train youths and prepare them to become doctors or physicians. Their school system also works differently from ours. Students bring their own lunch boxes and wash them themselves after use. Water is rationed in flasks which the students have to collect from a collection point. Stall vendors are required to wear masks and gloves when serving food so as to ensure cleanliness and good hygiene. There are few rubbish bins in the campus, yet it is kept litter-free.

In addition, Singapore and China have some cultural differences. In China, the principal smokes and even offers cigarettes to others within the school compound. In Singapore, such occurrences are either impossible or rare.

Our next stop was the jade factory. We learned some ways to determine the quality of a jade. We learned that a jade’s value is determined by its transparency, colour and purity. Also, black spots or cracks ruin the beauty of the jade. Many of us purchased jade bangles and accessories for our family members. Since our parents and grandparents are descendants of the Teo Chews, gift objects made of jade would help them reminisce their past.

Finally, we ended off the day with a formal dinner. The government officials of Jie Yang invited us for dinner. The food was delicious and unique. We also felt honored that someone of such high authority would set time aside to invite us for dinner. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us.
